The Summer of the Beer Garden was epic so it’s comforting that, as it winds down, it leads us right into Oktoberfest season, during which Philadelphia’s beer gardens can shine just as bright.

And that time is upon us it is officially Oktoberfest season in Philadelphia. Which means, over the next five-plus weeks, there are dozens of Oktoberfest celebrations coming to Philly.

Frankford Hall is bringing a block party to Frankford Ave in Fishtown; Brauhaus Schmitz is bringing a major festival to South Street (East); and Bloktoberfest is bringing another giant festival to South Street West. And those are just a few of the bigger celebrations coming our way.

So it’s time to break out your lederhosen and/or dirndl, raise a glass or more appropriately a stein, and party down Oktoberfest-style in Philly.

Prost!

Read on for our complete guide to Oktoberfest celebrations in Philadelphia. We’ve noted whether each Oktoberfest celebration is free — meaning no entry fee, but pay as you go — or ticketed.

Subterranean music venue Underground Arts hosts a cool collaboration between rockers and chefs this Wednesday, March 26. (Photo by G. Miller for Visit Philadelphia)

Philadelphia chefs rock, so it’s only natural that local toques would collaborate with rock 'n' rollers.

This spring, the good people of COOK, Philadelphia’s collaborative kitchen classroom, and Bonfire/Electric Factory Concerts are making beautiful music together with a series of guest chef appearances at Underground Arts.

The Callowhill-neighborhood venue is set to play host to a handful of Philly chefs, who will pop-in during select concerts to serve up creative bar-style food for the Underground Arts’ audiences.

The high note, though, is that all food proceeds will go to benefit the excellent programs of Philabundance, the region's largest hunger relief organization.

This Wednesday, March 26, the spring series gets started with chef Jeremy Nolan of Brauhaus Schmitz and the band …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, who are set to play with supporting acts La Femme and Midnight Masses.

Chef Nolan, who’s a fan of the band he’ll be supporting with culinary backup, is set to dish a menu of five plates including sauerkraut balls, smoked wild boar sausage and boneless chicken with bourbon hot sauce.

Beyond this week, look out for future collaborations on Friday, April 4 with the band Rocket From The Crypt and chef Mark McKinney of Royal Tavern, Khyber Pass Pub, Cantina Los Caballitos and Cantina Dos Segundos, as well as on Wednesday, May 21 with band Maximo Park and chef Sam Jacobson of Southwark.

Tickets to Wednesday’s show are $18 and available online, and all of Chef Nolan’s fare will run around $7 to $10 a plate.

The music gets started at 8 p.m., and food service will begin at 9 p.m., likely selling out quickly.

Grab a ticket now to rock out with Philadelphia culinary stars.

Things are getting serious at the World Cup this week. We’ve updated our guide to the best places to watch in Philadelphia with a bunch of new additions. USA plays Germany on Thursday at noon. See below for where you should watch. (Photo courtesy The Piazza at Schmidts)

UPDATE: We’ve updated this post on Monday, June 30 for this week's World Cup viewing (and the USA vs. Belgium game on July 1!).

Ok guys, pretty much the entire city has caught World Cup fever and it’s awesome. And there’s a lot of soccer still to be played.

There are three more days of group stage action today through Thursday, June 26, with four games each day, two taking place at noon and another two at 4 p.m.

Of course, the most anticipated game this week is Team USA’s showdown with Belgium at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1.

So where should you watch? That’s where this guide comes in. Below, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best places to watch the World Cup in Philadelphia.

Our guide is broken up into two main sections — 1) the largest venues as places to watch with a giant group of cheering fans and then 2) bars near downtown offices for those looking to sneak out to watch games during lunch/early afternoon.

World Cup Watching Tips:

Simultaneous Games. Since there are two games on at the same time this week, call ahead to make sure the place you want to go to will have the game that you want to watch. (No longer applicable this week.)

Game Sound. All of the below places should have game audio on. That said, it wouldn’t hurt to call in advance to double check. (And if they won’t put on the sound, go somewhere that will.)

Arrive early. Especially, for the USA v. Belgium game. The bars are going to be packed. Which can make for a great viewing experience. The key is to arrive early and secure a great vantage point of the big screens.

Ok, check out our full list of the best places to watch the World Cup in Philly below. We’re going to go shop for some Team USA gear…

Most people probably need time to prepare to face 2,000 pounds of roast pork and sausage, so this should be considered an official heads up: Brauhaus Schmitz Oktoberfest 2014 will take place on Saturday, September 20.

And there will be lots and lots of meat. The South Street bierhall is going above and beyond in an attempt to break last year's record for pork consumption.

In addition to the aforementioned meats, there will be bratwurst, bauernwurst, potato salad, sauerkraut and jumbo pretzels.

Of course, no Oktoberfest bash is complete without steins of beer. Brauhaus will be tapping its exclusive Traunstein Oktoberfest beer, plus nine other German notables: Warsteiner Oktoberfest, Pilsner and Dunkel; Paulaner Oktoberfest and Helles; Hofbru Oktoberfest and Helles; and Knig Ludwig Weissbier (no relation to this author).

Live oom-pah music, face painting and German folk dancing round out the rain-or-shine festivities.

For those looking to guarantee all of these and more, a limited quantity of VIP tickets are available for $100 each (tax and gratuity included). The splurge-worthy passes lock in an all-you-can-eat buffet of delicacies from 1 to 6 p.m., plus six beer tickets, an official t-shirt, and a liter size glass stein filled with "Oktoberfest survival supplies," as well as no-wait bathrooms — which is an absolute boon.

The block party festivities are free to attend with food and drink on a pay-as-you-go basis. For VIP tickets, check right here.

Prost!

If you've ever longed for the roasted goose Christmas dinners of yore, and you've had it with flavorless turkey, now's the time to visit Brauhaus Schmitz.

The South Street beer hall begins its annual service of Traditional Christmas Dinner inspired by classic seasonal German cuisine tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11.

Chef Jeremy Nolan’s feast starts with a choose of potato chestnut soup with pumpkin seed pesto or roasted beet salad. That first course is followed by the main event, a 10-pound whole roasted goose filled with housemade pretzel, apple and sage stuffing and served with giblet gravy as well as a cornucopia of side dishes: mini potato dumplings, braised sweet and sour cabbage, and pan-roasted Brussels sprouts.

For dessert, Brauhaus pastry chef Jessica Nolen serves up an array of holiday sweets such as lebkuchen (gingerbread cookies), pfeffernuss (spiced biscuits) and springele (anise sugar cookies).

Also included is a glass of Gluhwein, mulled red wine with spices, and a takeaway treat. The meal, which runs $60 per person before tax and gratuity, is served family style and will be available for parties of eight or more through Sunday, December 21.

Note that reservations are required at least two days in advance, as the spread requires 48 hours to prepare. Call 267-909-8814 to guarantee seats.
