It’s one of the most highly anticipated cookbooks of 2015, and it was written right here in Philly.

Now, New German Cooking: Recipes for Classics Revisited (Chronicle Books), the guide to contemporary Teutonic cuisine by Brauhaus Schmitz’s Jeremy and Jessica Nolen, is finally dropping.

The co-authors (and husband and wife) will celebrate the launch with a hometown book release party on Wednesday, February 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. at their South Street beer hall.

On hand will be complimentary appetizers, the opportunity to meet the authors and purchase books signed by Philly’s modern German cooking authorities.

Within the book itself? A range of dishes both historical and newly conceived such as kohlrabi salad with black garlic-sour cream dressing; cod-stuffed cabbage rolls with dill cream sauce; rabbit braised in spiced red wine with blood sausage sauce; spaetzel with asparagus, aged Gouda and ramp-hazelnut pesto; potato, parsnip and green onion pancakes; and roasted apricots with spiced dark lager sauce.

Note, too, that the cookbook includes contributions from Philadelphia food writer Drew Lazor and lovely images by Philadelphia photographer Jason Varney.

Can’t make it to the party? That’s okay. You can still nab a copy of the book online and in bookstores and impress your friends when you learn how to make that famous pretzel-stuffed goose at home.

South Street Spring Fest

On Saturday, May 2 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., eight blocks of South Street will be transformed into a full-blown, free festival for the annual South Street Spring Festival, which celebrates the food, drinks and shops of South Street with a ton of family-friendly alfresco fun.

The festival runs from South and Front streets to South and 8th streets — and also continues on the 2nd Street Plaza where the Headhouse Shambles is located. And this year, the 2nd Street Plaza will turn into a grassy lawn complete with live music, lawn games, beach balls and more.

More than 40,000 people are expected to turn up for the annual festival, which, only in its third year, has become one of Philly’s biggest spring festivals.

Along South Street, festival-goers will find more than 30 bars and restaurants serving up tastes of the wide variety of food, brews and cocktails available in the neighborhood. — last year, favorite South Street-area restos like Steaks on South, Copabanana, Supper and Pizzeria Stella were part of the lineup and a similar showing is expected this year with the addition of new spots like Tuk Tuk Real, Circles, Lil Pop Shop, Mom-Mom’s Polish Food Cart, Rita’s Water Ice.

Beyond food, three main stages will welcome a slew of local musicians to keep the crowd rocking throughout the nine-hour festival and arts, crafts and additional family-friendly fun, like the KidsZone, will entertain guests. Shopping from more than 40 retailers and artists will also round out the day.

Also returning this year is Brauhaus Schmitz Maifest, which brings a maipole, German music, beer and food to South Street from 7th to 8th streets.

Stay tuned for complete information on the South Street Spring Festival, as well as the additional spring festivals hitting Philadelphia on Saturday, May 2 like the Rittenhouse Row Spring Festival, the Philadelphia Science Festival Carnival on the Parkway and more.

Raise a stein to spring festivals at Brauhaus Schmitz’s ever-popular Maifest, a festival that celebrates not only spring, but serves as an ode to one of Germany’s biggest festivals — Maifest.

Brauhaus’ Maifest is presented as part of the South Street Spring Festival, a huge eight-block and nine-hour spring festival, which makes for even more alfresco festival fun on South Street this Saturday, May 2.

The festival takes over the entire 700 block of South Street with a traditional German maipole, keg tappings, liter lift competitions, German dancing performances and plenty of lederhosen and dirndl to boot.

Throughout the day, German beers will be flowing — think brews from Hofbräu, Paulaner and Warsteiner — in addition two special Maifest brews and traditional German fare like sausage sandwiches served with sauerkraut, bratwurst, roast pork platters, sausage platters and more.

Those interested in attending Maifest (and who isn’t?) can just visit the 700 block of South Street for pay-as-you-go food and drink from outdoor tents or purchase VIP tickets for $100, which get you access to private bathrooms, an appetizer buffet, eight tickets for food or drinks, a commemorative liter glass and more. VIP tickets are very limited and are available online.

Opening Alert: The Brauhaus Schmitz Team Debuts Whetstone Tavern Today, Wednesday, July 15

0
0

Philadelphia’s appetite for new restaurants never wanes.

This week, the city’s hunger for a tasty morsel of dining newness will be satiated with the opening of a new spot from the team behind successful South Street landmark Brauhaus Schmitz.

Chef Jeremy Nolen and owners Doug and Kelly Hager of South Street’s German beer hall have set their sights on solidly American cooking at the team’s new eatery, Whetstone.

Making its long-awaited debut today, Wednesday, July 15, Whetstone Tavern opens its doors to the public at 5 p.m. in a completely renovated space at 5th and Bainbridge streets — a location formerly home to a string of bars and restaurants, including Coquette, where Chef Nolen met his wife, Pastry Chef Jessica Nolen, who will handle desserts at Whetstone.

A turn from the modern German vibe at Brauhaus Schmitz and at the group’s Reading Terminal Market delicatessen, Wursthaus Schmitz, the decidedly American atmosphere at Whetstone comes through in the farmhouse-style furnishings, casual atmosphere and, of course, on the menu.

The American angle at Whetstone gives Chef Nolen the chance to demonstrate the breadth of his culinary skill, though his devotion to house-made sausage and charcuterie — a Schmitz hallmark — remains evident on the new menu.

From an open kitchen, cooks will turn out a menu of classic American comfort food that includes the likes of pan-seared cod; a 12-ounce bone-in pork chop; Blood Mary mussels; and Philadelphia Pepper Pot Soup, a take on a historic recipe.

In addition to the snacks and plates, the menu will be accompanied by the aforementioned charcuterie as well as a cheese list curated for Whetstone by the local cheese experts of Di Bruno Bros.

Naturally, given the new venture’s parentage, plenty of boozy beverages are on offer at Whetstone, too. Guests can expect a tightly curated list of beer on draft and in the bottle, with a larger focus on wine and cocktails, thanks to help from Philadelphia sommelier Marnie Old.

As if we needed more to whet our appetite for Whetstone, the team promises brunch is in the works and outdoor seating is to come.

Open for dinner daily, the restaurant starts serving at 5 p.m. and continues until 10:30 p.m. on weekdays, 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with a late-night weekend menu until midnight.

For now, make plans to satisfy that craving for new on-point eats at Whetstone.
